DVD Description

This 2001 Godzilla feature from Japan's Toho Studios, released as part of the mighty monster's 50th anniversary, is a visually impressive and action-packed entry in the long-running franchise, but also one with a fast and loose re-interpretation of its history that may displease some stalwart fans. Writer-director Shusuke Kaneko (who previously revitalized the Gamera series) erases everything that occurred after 1954's Godzilla and re-imagines the beast as a mythical creature harboring the souls of the Japanese victims of World War II; its attack is challenged by three "Guardian Monsters": Mothra, perennial villain King Ghidorah (here reinvented as hero) and B-list player Baragon (from Frankenstein Challenges the World). The retooling, while imaginative, is supported by spectacular special effects, but the monsters' brawls (a core reason for enjoying these films) seem abbreviated, and Kaneko's script experiences awkward seismic shifts from comedy to grim drama that may befuddle longtime G-fans. Columbia-Tri-Star's DVD is widescreen and offers Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and a Japanese language track (with English subtitles) that should please viewers with an aversion to dubbing. Trailers for other Sony/Columbia sci-fi titles like the American Godzilla feature are also included. --Paul Gaita

A Kaiju Masterpiece

This movie, along with the original uncut Japanese version of Godzilla and the 3rd Heisei Gamera film, can be treated as not only a masterpeice of kaiju films but also of all cinema. This movie captures the soul and darkness of the original, and has the best special effects seen in the series. The monsters are spectacular. This is the most terrifying and powerful Godzilla teh series has seen in a long time. He is cruel, fast, extremely powerful and intelligent. Mothera and Baragon have gotten makeovers as well and look spectacular. King Ghidora looks a tad weak in the movie, and doesn't instill the ssame amount of awe and power he had in earlier movies. The acting from the main characters is great, and the human story is not just made as filler until the next kaiju battle. The script is much better than the quality of the script in the other movies in the Millenium series, and keeps the human story entertaining. I will be blunt: every single kaiju fan owes it to him or her self to see this movie, and even if you aren;t a fan of the genre you will find this movie to be exhilirating and powerful.

The best ive seen for a while

Well closer to a 4.7/5 but still i have never seen Godzilla this
mean. He is driven by a the force of the souls ofall who died during the war. Anyway great action, great fun and a delight
to watch. Quite a improvement on other movies before 2000.
Wait till you see his eyes..........

There is no sleeping during Godzilla movies!

I fell asleep watching this movie; not that this movie is the worst, (that distinction goes to Godzilla vs. Megalon!) but the actual fight scences that we Godzilla fans have come to love take SOOOOOOOO LOOOOOONG to get there!

However, once the monsters Mothra, Baragon, and Kong Ghidorah finally fight Godzilla, it's a pleasure to watch. This DVD comes with both English and Japanese soundtracks, so if you ever were curious as to how the actors REALLY sound like without the dubbing, now's the chance.

I also found the humor at the start of the movie very good when two soldiers wonder if the Godzilla that attacked NYC recently was the real deal; a slap in the face to the U.S. Godzilla movie that came out in 1998 with Matthew Broaderick.

So, all in all, this movie will be entertaining, once you get past the boring parts.
