DVD Description

Widely considered the best movie in the "classic Trek" series of feature films, Star Trek IV returns to one of the favorite themes of the original TV series--time travel--to bring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov from the 23rd century to present-day San Francisco. In their own time, the Starfleet heroes encounter an alien probe emitting a mysterious message--a message delivered in the song of the now-extinct Earth species of humpback whales. Failure to respond to the probe will result in Earth's destruction, so Kirk and company time-travel to 20th-century Earth--in their captured Klingon starship--to transport a humpback whale to the future in an effort to peacefully communicate with the alien probe. The plot sounds somewhat absurd in description, but as executed by returning director Leonard Nimoy, this turned out to be a crowd-pleasing adventure, filled with humor and lively interaction among the favorite Star Trek characters. Catherine Hicks (from TV's 7th Heaven) plays the 20th-century whale expert who is finally convinced of Kirk's and Spock's benevolent intentions. With ample comedy taken from the clash of future heroes with 20th-century urban realities, Star Trek IV was a box-office smash, satisfying mainstream audiences and hardcore Trek fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

Brilliant, Superb, Great Entertainment

Two Discs packed with entertainment information, and an extremely good time.
Nicholas Meyer wrote part of this Film, and despite that short coming, :-), it is great; you get to discover which parts he wrote too !!! And surprise, surprise, both Meyer and Shatner agree on one thing, the use of Time Travel as a device is not that great. However, its very good fun in this film.
Nimoy once again proces his brilliance as a director in what I believe is his third directorship, and maybe fourth. He correctly picks some significant changes in the stories edge, and manages to safely create one of the most popular films in the STAR TREK film series.
The features on disc 2 are brilliant, and the detailed Tribute to Mark Lenard is awesome !!! Some of the discussions may be a bit too much for some, but the loads of extras is more than enough to justify the cost, even with the disc one audio and video quality, as well as a DVD menu that is way better than STAR TREK VI ( the only other one in this series I have seen so far), the icing is on the cake.

One of the best films of the 80s.

Star Trek IV is quite simply fantastic. It is a sheer joy to watch, has a beautiful message, and is a high water mark for the entire Star Trek franchise. All of the cast members have excellent parts, the humor is very funny and often touching, and it never lapses into corniness. Really incredible if you think about it.

What really pulls the film through is a series of scenes in the middle third where Kirk and Spock meet up with the marine biologist. All three actors play their parts perfectly -- it is genuinely funny, and Kirk's dinner is played with just the right mixture of humor. Nimoy has an undeniable talent for directing intimate scenes.

A lot of die hard Trek fans dis The Voyage Home because it doesn't have the testosterone or fury of Star Trek II, which always comes out on top. Yet that film, great as it may be, is not really as in keeping with the spirit of original series as this one. Nimoy understands that it was the message and humor of Star Trek that always elevated the show past geekdom, and he took everything wonderful about the Trek phoenominon and made this film. To my mind, there can be no doubt that this is the very rare case where the most commercial film in a series winds up being its best.

This is where the original crew should have hung up their uniforms and retired. The ending has just the perfect touch, quite unlike Star Trek VI. The Voyage Home should not be thought of as "only" a Trek film, but considered as a moment when this genre broke from its boundaries.

On a lesser note, it is unfortunate that every video release has used this horrendous piece of art on the cover. The original poster was a gorgeous Bob Peak painting with a sun-drenched Golden Gate bridge and the swooping Bird of Prey.

Do not need to be a Trekkie

This movie is very well written, directed and acted....it is more about the human adventure (with its humor) as much as sci-fi. It has it all excitement, humor, terror, oh yes did I mention humor?. The main Star Trek cast really do enjoy acting with one another and it shows through out. The DVD extras are well woth watching also.
