DVD Description

"The Tomb of the Cybermen" brought the Doctor, Patrick Troughton, into conflict with his silver cyborg nemesis for a third time, following "The Tenth Planet" (1966) and "The Moonbase" (1967). The Doctor, Jamie (Frazer Hines), and Victoria (Deborah Watling) join an archaeological expedition to explore the planet Telos, where they encounter death traps, betrayal, and a waiting army of frozen Cybermen. Scripted by Kit Pedlar and Gerry Davis, who would later write Doomwatch (1970-72), many of the essentials of the plot anticipate James Cameron's blockbuster Aliens (1986): the barren planet with abandoned city, the tense wait for a rescue ship, the human traitors, the implacable, more powerful enemy. There are a few flaws, but this is a superior Doctor Who adventure of its time and a thoroughly entertaining piece of classic television. --Gary S. Dalkin

Don't have to be a Who fan to love this one

Brilliant story with one of the primary enemies of The Doctor, the Cybermen. If you like classic Sci-Fi stuff, b-movies, whatever, you'll love it even if you're not familiar with Doctor Who.

I love the special effects, my favorite is when the giant Toberman is lifted with ease by a Cyberman, and you can quite clearly see the wire latched to his trousers giving the illusion of the strength of the Cybermen.

What is stunning is the work of the restoration team. When the original prints were found at long last in Hong Kong, it went to video right away, and I remember watching it then. Now the DVD remastered is incredible, and the mini feature in the special features section shows you the difference. It's really amazing what they can do.

You are not like us...you will be

I remember when this story was discovered in the early 90's. I remeber buying it on video when it first came out. I watched it non-stop and had never seen it before. I quite enjoyed it. It is good to see a complete story with Victoria in it. The DVD is of course much better than the VHS release. If you can only buy one current Patrick Troughton DVD, pick this one up.

Possibly my favorite Cyber Story

The Tomb of the Cybermen opened the fifth season of Doctor Who (Patrick Troughton's second season as the Doctor) with the return of the silver nemesis which had been introduced the previous season (Tomb was the Doctor's third encounter with the Cybermen). The Doctor and his companions Jamie (Frazer Hines)and Victoria (Deborah Watling) arrive on Telos where an archaeological expedition from Earth is attempting to uncover the lost tombs of the Cybermen. After the destrucution of their original homeworld of Mondas, the Cybermen adopted Telos as their new home, and that planet is believed to be their final resting place. After the Doctor and the archaeologists enter the tombs, two members of the party are revealed as traitors. Klieg and his business partner Kaftan are members of the Brotherhood of Logicians, and they seek to revive the Cybermen who are not dead, but in fact, hybernating in the tombs. Michael Kilgarriff, who plays the Cyber Controller in this story would reprise the role in 1985's Attack of the Cybermen with Colin Baker as the Doctor. The Tomb of the Cybermen is the earliest intact CyberStory from the classic Doctor Who series, and it is perhaps my favorite CyberStory overall. Tomb is well-written (Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis) and directed (Morris Barry). George Pastell makes a great villain as logician Eric Klieg. One of my big gripes with Cyber stories from the 1970's and 80's was the fact that the Cybermen often showed emotion, while the stories of the 60's presented them as the cold, emotionless machines they were supposed to be. The Cybermen are very much like a forerunner to Star Trek's Borg, and they remain one of my favorite DW enemies/monsters of all time. And I am pleased to hear they are slated to return for an episode during the second season of the new DW series with David Tennant as the Doctor. I can't wait!
