Colin Baker: the maligned Time Lord. Why?
I have always thought Colin Baker was treated poorly during his life as Doctor Who. The Trial of a Time Lord was perhaps my favorite collection of his work. I like the idea of linking episodes in a arc - it certainly worked well for "The Key to Time" and "Babylon 5!"
I like this set. The music is among the best from the Doctor Who series and as far as I remember it was also one of the first to use synthesizer music. As a college graduate in music I understand the detractions of the synthesizer, chiefly many professional musicians are replaced with one thus added to the unemployment statistics. The advantage is a much more lush sound - a sound in approximation of a larger ensemble.
Finally, I liked the idea of the trial, Who the "Valyard" actually is, and the outcome.
Great Doctor Bad Trial
It was a mess from the start and it shows. The multiple re-writings of the last episode are completely obvious and even confusing. Terror of the Vervoids stands out as the best of the collection. The rest of the stories are just not good. Take this advice from a 40 year Who fan. It was a bad time for the series and Colin Baker at the hands of then BBC controller Michael Grade and his political game that ended Baker's brilliant portrayl of our favorite timelord. I loved John Nathan Turner as producer but even the best queen can't pull a sad show together when the resources just aren't there to used. Sorry Guys.
Absolutely Dreadfully BORING!
"Trial of a Time Lord" is the absolutely worst Dr Who I have ever seen and I like almost all of them. The script is inane and tedious. The plot is non-existent and the repartee between Colin Baker and Peri is monotonously repetitious. Words cannot express just how dreadful this long, 14 part torture really is.
