VHS Tape Description

The production values aren't the greatest here, but this adaptation does capture some of the ebullient, hilarious anarchy of Douglas Adams's book. Arthur Dent discovers that his friend, Ford Prefect, isn't human at all but an alien on assignment, writing for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Many of Adams's delicious asides are dropped off here, like the woman who figures out the meaning of life right at the moment that she gets blown up with the rest of the Earth, but it retains what it can. Sure, the book was better, and the realization of Zaphod Beeblebox and Trillian are, well, just different, but it's a great introduction to the series for the uninitiated. --Keith Simanton

The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy

Well actually I am reviewing the 2005 edition that is now on DVD.
I just bought this weird but goofy movie a few days ago and did not understand it. What's even more weird was the intro with the goofy song "So Long, So Long Thanks For All The Fish". And the swimming dolphins in the water. What's even more weird is the funny Jim Henson donated gigantic "flealike" creatures that were in the movie too. The movie has an odd list of actors in it of whom I've NEVER heard of. The only three actors whom I have heard of were ALAN RICKMAN (Galaxy Quest, Die Hard, Dogma) and Sam Rockwell (who also played in Galaxy Quest) and the dwarf actor Warwick Davis (famous for his roles in the six LEPRECHAUN movies) he is dressed in the Marvin The Paranoid Android outfit. Rickman does Marvin's voice. Rockwell who plays an odd character as the President after Earth was mistakenly destroyed by the alien race. And a woman named Trillian. Theres another actor in this who plays Arthur Dent. It starts off that a black man comes to him to warn him that Earth will be blown to bits to leave with him to a spaceship. So when they leave the Earth is COVERED all over with little bity square spaceships and all at once they blow Earth to bits leaving nothing left. Sam Rockwell as I mentioned plays an awesome role of the President and his "two headed" performance how he pulls his other head out from under his chin. Marvin however (Davis) was funny how he would say his one liners or remarks actually Rickman's voice. I remember buying a Dr. Demento's Novelty Song Collection of the 1980's and there was a song on there called "MARVIN I LOVE YOU" sung by Kimi Wong (wife of Rocky Horror Picture Show actor Richard O'brien) which was actually by MARVIN THE PARANOID ANDROID based on the character Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy how funny that is. Well I kinda coincide the song and the movie and I don't see how the two relate cause the song doesn't mention it or the movie. And the song SO LONG, SO LONG THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH....I do not understand that song either but, it was a weird song. My wife also thought this movie was weird too but as I said, it had some of it's funny moments the part where they turned into yarn and Arthur Dent was drunk and threw up colorful yarn. I think that this DVD oughta get a five star PLUS rating cause it was goofy and pointless but still weird at its' best. If anyone has not seen this particular version the description of it's box is a silvery grey label with Arthur Dent in his robe, and standing around him is Marvin The Paranoid Android and on the back the President and Trillian. I think Trillian is rather attractive with her dark auburn hair and freckles don't you? Well you'll have to see it for yourself.

Life, the Universe and all the Fish...

Fans of the late Douglas Adams have known of this BBCversion of his Opus, The Hithchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, for years now. Originally a radio serial, theseries tells the story of one Arthur Dent, victim ofProgress on an intergalactic scale. After losing his home to a "Hyperspace Bypass", he travels the galaxy with friend Ford Prefect. Along the way, he meets some verysingular characters, and discovers the answer to theUltimate Question...sort of. It turns out that the Earth was created as a monster computer, to decipher this, the Ultimate Question...Sadly, the Earth was destroyed mere moments before the answer was revealed. "The mice were furious!", declaresSlartibartfast, architect of the original Earth... Vastly superior to the 2005 feature film, this new DVD version of the 1981 television series includes lots ofextras, and is a must for fans of good, weird Sci-Fi,and devotees of Douglas Adams. Five+Stars!!!

DON'T PANIC. Or do.

I liked this T.V. series alot, but I didn't love it (thus only 4 stars) and here's why:

1. Zaphod isn't as cool as he is in the book (he doesn't even think he's cool and isn't like in the recent movie), instead he's just kinda cool... but not "OMGZ SO COOLZ" like in the book.

2. Trillian is a bit peppy. And the make-up is odd.

3. Some of the jokes kinda "plop" with the performance, like the one about Ford joking Arthur about a switch to escape, the pauses and stuff kinda make the joke not funny.

If you can get back those things (and that the sets look EXTREMELY dated) then you'll like it.

If you can't, then Belgium bummer, you probably won't like it.
